Prerequisites

Mid-America Hunting Association started in 1965 as a self guided hunter organization and continues so today with our self guided turkey hunts.

Self guided turkey hunts - not easy -
just good turkey hunts.

Prerequisites for self guided turkey hunts are first willpower and second, turkey hunter capability. The first part, willpower, is entirely left to the turkey hunter. We will fully support any turkey hunter of any skill level that has the willingness to hunt. On the second part, we will provide the resource capability to make the self guided hunt possible. That statement sometimes needs to be reinforced as we are a hunt execution organization and not a hunter training organization.

Congratulations Landon and good going dad! A tough job getting a youth successful, always worth a picture on the wall.

Resources Provided

The hunter provides his own hunting skills, licensing and equipment.

Spring and fall turkey tags are both available online and in person over the counter purchase for Missouri and Kansas. Iowa requires a tag application process with an ending period in late January each year. In the case of Missouri the turkey tags are statewide. For Kansas and Iowa the tags are turkey management unit specific. We will assist the hunter at selecting the right Kansas or Iowa turkey management unit to ensure the right habitat within the right state and region that has a good history of production for either Eastern or Rio Grande Turkey.

Long before any first year member turkey hunter drives out of his driveway he will know exactly where he will be hunting. Our recommendations of where to hunt are based on our year round boots on the ground observations. If we recommend a spot or two it will be due to our having observed birds.

Our motivation for good recommendations is that a good hunt will insure that hunter returns for years of hunts to come. We, unlike a guide service seek return hunters, similarly as a business and not a hunting club, we have an absolute parity approach to business where all receive good customer service.

An example of recommended turkey hunting leases to hunt is frequently a listing such as this one we sent out to a new member.

Missouri, Harney A 12, flock roosts on neighbor's property to the east, flydown is to our grain field.

Missouri, Clay C 19, spotted the flock in the afternoon on the center crop field.

Missouri, Ottawa C 15, found plenty of different aged turkey tracks, did not see any birds.

Kansas, Burgeon B 8, large Rio flock on south side.

Kansas, Goodland C 2, roost is on the creek bottom in the center, flock seen mid morning on edge of the CRP.

The above location references make more sense once the hunter gains access to our online leas land maps such as the example below.

After the first season or two the self guided hunter will be familiar with his favorite spots and have confidence to go exploring new regions on his own. The challenge we are overcoming is that we offer too many choices of where to hunt. We get all started by narrowing down the options to a manageable few.

Once the hunter gets to where to park his truck, step out and hunt the land he will be hunting is 100% private we lease for our exclusive use. That means he will be able to traverse it with ease not concerned with others on that land or any public lands hunter mentality.

Some of this information is repetitive to other web pages as we are never sure at which point any reader enters the website.

Lodging will be by local motel with the hunter making his own reservations.

Caution

An aspect to overcome is within a self guided hunter organization contrasted to a turkey hunt guiding service, a self guided hunter banks on his ability being better than that of a guide, foremost. We offer that we offer turkey hunts and do not require all to be experienced and highly successful turkey hunters. The novice as well as the career long successful turkey hunter are all invited to hunt.

Second, the added adventure of making one's own success and more frequent failure is part of the hunt quality aspect that can never be gained from a guide service. We offer that resource of private land of the right habitat within the right turkey production region of the state to give those that want a bit more adventure in their life a place to experience it.

What we offer is simply self guided turkey hunts and turkey hunting is hard even when all the conditions of birds on ground, private land, low to no hunter pressure exist. We do not imply any guarantee of success that some assume once payment for a hunt is made. Those that enjoy first a quality wild turkey hunt experience without man influenced behavior of feeders that is what we offer on a self guided basis.

Good turkey hunts to all!
