John:

We just got back from our MAHA turkey hunt and I thought I would send you some pictures.

My Dad went with me this year and he has been hunting turkeys for two years in Vermont without any luck. In three days in [location deleted] he had tagged two turkeys. His largest bird was 20.25 pounds with a 9 1/2 inch beard with 3/4 inch spurs. The highlight of the trip was my Dad getting his first turkeys. After Dad got his birds I was able to get a couple myself. The first one coming at 7:30 pm in a pouring rainstorm, which is evident in the poor quality photo. I got my second turkey the next morning at 10:45 am. This one was the larger of the two weighing in at 23 pounds with a 10 inch beard and 1 1/4 spurs.

We saw lots of turkeys everyday even though the conditions were tough for killing birds The wind blew 30 mph three of the four days we hunted and the turkeys were still bunched up with each gobbler having several hens with him. Having said that the amount of birds on these properties certainly tipped the scales back in our favor.

Thank you John and Jon.

First Season

Dear John:

I just returned from my first hunt as a member of the Mid-America Hunting Association and wanted to send you some pictures. My hunting trip from Vermont to [location deleted] to hunt turkeys lasted a total of one day. My first bird pictured weighed 18 1/2 pounds and the second bird pictured weighed 23 1/2 pounds and had a 9 inch beard. The first bird was harvested at 9:00 AM and the second was harvested at 7:30 PM. As you can tell these are Rio Grande turkeys, which makes it especially nice coming from a place with only Eastern turkeys.

I was extremely impressed with the quality of the properties that I hunted or scouting during my trip. To be honest with you though, what has impressed me more than the quality properties has been you folks that run the Association. John, you have spent hours talking with me on the phone about every aspect of the club that I could think to ask about. Also, my reservations were made 30 days prior to my trip and a two weeks before my departure I received a call at home from the Association telling me that Jon Nee had been in the area that I was going to be hunting and that he had seen some turkeys on another property in that area. He suggested that I change my reservation to this property and it was where I harvested my two birds. These are not actions that are advertised or were expected as part of my Association dues but were greatly appreciated and were key to me having some success. I would also like to say thanks to Jennifer who was very helpful and patient when dealing with me as a first year member.

Thanks again for everything and good luck to all the turkey hunters in the Association, I look forward to seeing your pictures.

Sincerely, Kevin M
