Day #1The previous night I had drove by the property and seen a hen and 1 long beard making their way to the edge of the timber. The next morning I walked up the side of the timber and never heard him gobble until I was almost on top of him. Lucky for me he never seen me and shortly flew out into the field. Just a few calls brought him right in. After I shot him I went back to my truck, took a few pictures and was out hunting shortly after. I heard two other turkeys gobbling in the distance and just sat and called every now and then. At 12:15 I noticed another long beard a few hundred yards out in the field. I got up and swung around on him to get within 100 yards. Once I did that without him seeing me it took about 15 minutes to call him in the rest of the way. Unfortunately, I forgot to take a picture of him. Day #2 I heard two large groups of turkeys gobbling, but could not get anything to respond. I hunted until 12:30 but never had any luck. Day #3 I heard this turkey gobbling off the roost and moved in on him, only to hear that hens were with him. Once he flew down he went out into a great big field. All I did was move along the edge of the woods to cut him off as he and his hens were going to leave the field. After 2 1/2 hours he finally came into range. I never called one time. I just waited for his hens to leave hoping he would follow.
I heard one turkey gobbling on MAHA ground and when I moved in on them unfortunately they went the wrong way, but stayed on the ground I was hunting. When I relocated them they were just over a sharp hill that had a little chunk of tall grass. So I quickly crawled out to that grass and was able to kill the long beard. As a first year member spring turkey season couldn't have been better taking 4 long beards in 4 days of hunting. Joe Click the icons below to read Joe's letters in the original format.
