Private Land Hunting

To hunt as a member of Mid-America Hunting Association accessing all private lease land in Kansas, Missouri and Iowa for turkey hunting as well as for Mule and Whitetail Deer; pheasant and quail; duck and goose as well as summer time fishing and pre-season scouting begins with a telephone conversation.

That first telephone conversation the applicant will declare his primary and secondary hunting interest such as deer and turkey hunting. We will then cover all the rules for those two hunting disciplines. That conversation has two goals. The first is to insure there will not be any surprises later as a member and second to insure we can work together. If we agree then it is a matter of payment by check or credit card and sending in the membership agreement.

To prepare for that first telephone conversation we offer as preparation a system that has worked well for many. the first task is to review our rules. The rules are long, drawn out and a boring read. What the rules will do is clearly establish the relationship between the hunter and the Association. We keep our life very simple and any hunter activity that is permissible is in the rules or it is not. We do not negotiate.

The next step would be to review several turkey hunter testimonials. The testimonials will provide the value others found from their membership.

Between reading the rules and the testimonials the applicant should be able to develop some questions that bridge the gap between the hunting that he believes we provide and the hunting he seeks. Those are the questions to ask us.

If after that first conversation if we agree we can work together we will offer the names and telephone numbers of members with the same hunting interests to call and ask the same questions. Evaluation of the consistency of responses from our answers to that of the various members will provide a good indicator of the hunt quality to be expected.

In all cases we may elect to reject any membership application. If we do, our only stated reason will be to say we: "decline your application for membership". We will not provide any further rationale.

Self guided turkey hunter and member Joe Steve graciously sent in these live turkey pictures taken while pre-season scouting.

The picture above is of Eastern Turkeys on a large creek watershed. Joe sent the picture as a digital and when we enlarged it we could count 69 turkeys in the field and along the far wood edge. Eastern Turkey gallery.

The turkeys above are Rio Grande Turkeys from the western half of Kansas. There were more turkeys than what was pictured. Joe was smart in that after identifying their location moved out of the area planning a return turkey hunt. This lease is prime turkey habitat as it is the only grain crop farm locally surrounded by pasture. The grass hills offer nesting and the lightly wooded drainage the roosts trees. This open terrain is very common to the Rio Grande Turkey range. This flock as well as the Eastern Turkey flock in the picture above have been anchored to these two turkey hunting leases for the past 7 years (easterns) and 4 years (rios). Such live turkey pictures do better than any aerial photo or text description can to illustrate our turkey hunting habitat. A great thank you to Joe for sharing his pictures.
