Turkey Habitat

Paired aerial and ground level live turkey pictures.

winter turkey flock

Paired ground and aerial photos are a good means by which to establish reasonable expectations in those new to turkey hunting in the central mid-west. this is agricultural land hunting and its open nature may be completely unfamiliar as how to turkey hunt to the big woods and scrub country turkey hunter.

farm land turkey

We are out on the land throughout the year as leasing land is a year round job to keep ahead of land sales, farm land improvements (bull dozer activity) landowners dying and more. We remember what we see when and where that serve as the basis for our recommendations to our hunters where to hunt for what they are after.
This flock was photographed while we were on a land run to evaluate current leases and potential new land. The ground picture is from December. We have found through the years many first time central mid-west hunters are too quick to dismiss a farm due to aerial rather than foot scouting or spending a day in stand. Some of the best hunts have come from the most seemingly "poor" habitat farms.

Late season hunts are always a concern with some believing that the first week is the best time for success. These two pictures are from June 10 on an early, no till, soybean field.

Any behavior observation, any time of year all contributes to knowing where to hunt. We will pass that information onto the new Mid-America Hunting Association hunter.
